As long as they publish their findings to the public it's the companies' obligation to fix them asap. They were no different from hackers finding and publicizing security holes in software. I actually admire DerEngel (and the other unnamed bright people) that drove this.
Today you cannot cheat a properly setup Cable network. I worked for a Cable ISP (not US) at the time this first started and for the next few years, and as part of my job I've both used hacked modems and implemented the fixes Cisco and others came up with. These have all been closed and fixed, and the only way you can cheat with your cable speeds today is if your company is too dumb/cheap to implement the fixes. Years ago the work of DerEngel and others found and exploited actual issues in DOCSIS and Cisco's CMTS hardware. Instead, the cable operators should be indicted for not doing their part to protect people with technology that DOCSIS has provided for at least 5 years now. Why don't cable operators take responsibility in protecting their customers like enabling encryption, and limiting bandwidth at the cable office? Instead they parade people like DerEngel in front of the public pointing out how bad he is. That is something not mentioned in any articles I've read. Think of it as a giant router for cable modems. The CMTS is the equipment at the other end of the coax-cable that connects the coax to the internet, and talks to the cable modem, sending and receiving data, and telling the modem when to talk. In an interview with Wired's Threat Level blog, he claimed that the government's move to prosecute him for selling unlocked cable modems would be like "arresting every firearms dealer, because handguns can be used to commit murder." AdvertisementĪ cable operator is able to override just about any cable modem hack through the CMTS. Harris contends that his modded modems and custom firmware have a multitude of legitimate uses.

The case raises the question of whether a company that mods hardware should be held responsible when their customers abuse the modded products for dubious purposes. The basis for these charges, says the indictment, is that Harris aided and abetted others in accessing a protected computer without authorization with the intent to defraud. In an apparent crackdown on cable modem hacking, law enforcers have brought criminal charges against Harris, accusing him of wire fraud and computer fraud.

He runs a small company that sells unlocked cable modems with custom firmware and provides instructional material that explains how to manipulate the devices in various ways.Īlthough there are plenty of valid reasons for users to want complete access to their network hardware, cable modem hacking can also be used to circumvent ISP-imposed bandwidth caps and obtain free service through MAC address spoofing. It provides one downstream port of 40 Mbps and up to 6 upstream ports of 10 Mbps each. This CMTS supports approximately 1,300 users.

The combiner merges the TV programming feeds with the RF data from the CMTS. It may also provide routing, bridging, filtering and traffic shaping. See cable modem.Ī CMTS performs packet format conversion and IP address assignment (see DHCP). It may also provide traffic shaping, which guarantees quality of service (QoS) to selected customers, and it may provide bridging or routing capabilities. The CMTS may include a variety of functions, including filtering to protect against theft of service and denial-of-service attacks as well as preventing hackers from breaking into the cable system.

It reverses the process coming from the cable modems.Ī DOCSIS-compliant CMTS enables the customer's router or PC to dynamically obtain an IP address from the cable company by acting as a proxy and forwarding requests to DHCP servers. It inserts IP packets from the Internet into MPEG frames and transmits them to the cable modems via an RF signal.
CMTS( Cable Modem Termination System) A computer-based device that enables cable modems to send and receive packets over the Internet.
